Lens Coatings: Anti-Reflection, Clean Coat & Co.

Beyond tinted lens technology – today’s lens coating options

18.09.2009 | | By BETTER VISION | Eyeglass lenses, Lens finishing

Lens coating: This technique warrants crystal-clear vision in any weather; repels dirt and simplifies lens maintenance. It can even enhance the cosmetic appearance of the visual aid. Coatings for eyeglass lenses turn every lens into a small masterpiece and combine practicality with pleasure. Making them does require some expertise.

Beschichtungen für die BrilleMany people who wear glasses choose the traditional option: Anti-reflective coating. Lenses that do not have anti-reflective coating come with a fundamental disadvantage: They produce clearly visible light reflections that can cause vision problems. These light reflections are particularly disruptive on wet roads or while driving in the dark, but also in face-to-face conversations when people you are talking with see their own mirror images in your glasses instead of your eyes. The advantage of anti-reflective coating: It facilitates transparent, clear vision and undisturbed perception, makes eyeglasses more attractive and facilitates a clear view of the spectacle wearer’s eye zone.

The effectiveness of the anti-reflective coating is graded according to degrees of reflection: The grades of anti-reflective coating are basically "simple," "medium" and "super," and can be combined into various upgrade packages (such as coating that repels dirt or filter tints) (Decision-making tip: Plastic or glass?).

These anti-reflective coatings have a single identifying and distinctive feature: So-called residual reflection. It features a characteristic colour for anti-reflective coating regardless of the lens material. It is practical for the spectacle wearer: The optometrist can easily identify the anti-reflective coating and can offer the standard the wearer is used to when switching to another lens material.

A Great Pair: Plastic and Hard Coating

A must for plastic lenses (so-called organic lenses): Hard coating. Although plastic lenses are comfortable and easy to wear, they are also softer and less resistant to scratches in comparison to untreated mineral(glass) lenses.

A special sealing material that provides a hard coating tailored to the material increases the scratch resistance of plastic lenses, thus maintaining constant vision quality and prolonging the lifespan of the spectacles. By the way: The thicker the plastic lenses are, the more important it is for them to have hardening coating! Carl Zeiss Vision offers these so-called highly refractive plastic lenses with standard hardening coating.

Can you imagine never having to clean your glasses again?

Impurities do not stand a chance: Clean Coat polishes the surface of the lens and prevents dirt and dust from adhering tightly and consequently makes lens maintenance considerably easier. The coating is completely invisible! Even water rolls off easily – like off a lotus leaf - thanks to the coating’s favourable wetting properties. This is a useful extra benefit, particularly for lenses with anti-reflective coating. Thanks to improved glare reduction, dirt is detected sooner on these lenses than on their uncoated contemporaries.

Top of the Class: LotuTec

The innovative LotuTec coating combines the advantages of the upgrades mentioned: It has super anti-reflective coating, is hardened with nanoparticles and features a revolutionary pearl-off effect thanks to the extremely smooth Clean Coat.

By the way: Virtually all upgrades are combined into one practical coating with Carl Zeiss premium high-tech systems – leaving nothing to be desired.
