Glass Can Be More Expensive Than Gold

Many factors determine the value of organic glass

18.09.2009 | | By BETTER VISION | Carl Zeiss, ZEISS News

We are surrounded by products made from glass every day – drinking glasses, window panes, storage surfaces in the refrigerator – and – of course – in eyeglasses we wear to correct our vision problems.

Proven and time tested, glass is a material that is available in numerous versions. The differences are in the melting point, the refraction index and the obfuscation levels. These tiny fine differences are critical in the production of lenses later used in film and photo lenses as well as eyeglasses.

In its lens manufacturing processes alone, Carl Zeiss uses more than 100 different optical glass types of superior quality, from which the company makes about 350 different lenses for up to 150 lenses. Some of the optical glasses or crystals processed by the manufacturer are more expensive than gold and almost as heavy as steel. Important factors in the selection of glass qualities are the grinding capabilities, heat expansion and the homogeneity of the refraction patterns. All of this data is accurately documented.

The result: Premium lenses that make Carl Zeiss film and photo lenses perfect for even the most challenging demands.
